Matej started his professional career in 2009 at the age of 21 as Sporting director at Nogometni klub Domžale and continued as CEO of the club since 2017 until his departure from the club in July of 2025, after an ownership structure change and takeover. In this time NK Domžale was established as the third best club in Slovenia and the best youth academy in the country. The club won 2 Slovenian cups, 1 Supercup and participated in 36 european matches adn established the only fully functioning youth academy with over 20 players on a yearly basis. In his time in NK Domžale the clubs budget increased three fold and the total amount of transfer income has surpased 25 mio € of income in 15 years. In the last EURO Team Slovenija therefore consisted of 7 former NK Domžale players that developed under Matej’s leadership and in the EURO U21 further 8 players developed by NK Domžale were in the Slovenia’s U21 national team. Some of the players developed by NK Domžale in this period include Benjamin Šeško, Adam Gnezda Čerin, Luka Topalović, Mitja Ilenić, Tamar Svetlin, Erik Janža, Jon Gorenc Stanković and many, many more Serbian nationals Nemanja Maksimović and Andrej Djurić, Austrian national Arnel Jakupović, Jamaican nationalShammar Nicholson, Antiguan national Joshua Parker and Croatian national Dario Meljnak. Matej graduated from Ljubljana Law School in 2011 with his thesis focusing on the privatisation of football clubs in Slovenia.
